John Carter - Official Trailer [HD]

The upcoming "John Cater" movie is based on characters and situations from the Edgar Rice Burroughs books, John Carter of Mars

I spend -- In the past have spent -- hours amusing myself by reading books of adventure and of the fantastic. Many years ago, when I was a kid, in junior high school, I attempted on several occasions to read the Burroughs' John Carter of Mars books and found them uninteresting, very shallow. I tried several books in the series and found the writing so bland that it made my eyes tired. But the books have been popular for generations. Their position in pop culture is what made me want to trudge through them, and trudging is what I did, until I had to finally give up. The trudging was a weary journey, and made reading those books a drudgery, and reading for ones own amusement should be a pleasure, or what's the point? The Burroughs' books had very interesting covers.

But. or and, I found the writing in Mr. Burroughs' Tarzan books just as bland and uninteresting The Tarzan books gave rise to the Tarzan movies which gave rise to an immortal movie franchise.

Now in the 21st century, movie makers are capable of putting on the screen stories of the truly fantastic. And maybe film makers will pull from Burroughs' John Carter books a second Burroughs' immortal movie franchise?

As for the upcoming movie, scheduled to be release on March 9, 2012 -- I hope the film makers narrative and visuals are a vast improvement on Mr. Burroughs' story and descriptions. The producer is the Disney company. Disney is billing the flick as falling in the genre of Family | Adventure | Sci-Fi. No bloody violent Conan, huh? Judging from the trailer, the production values look top rate. This is a Disney flick. One expects top rate production values. The special effects look okay. It's hard to tell if this will be a winner or not. Those of us who like to watch genre flicks are always hoping for winners.

To borrow and to expand on a line in the trailer -- Let's hope that when we look at this film, we will be able to say that something new and different, and worth seeing on repeat viewings, has come into this word.
